Governor Kathy Hochul has decidedly met with Long Island Emergency Management Officials in order to properly regard the amount of readiness New Yorkers can have to be prepared throughout hurricane season. This is because there’s a high likelihood that hurricanes will hit the Empire State in a catastrophic way. The Citizen Preparedness Corps Initiative is a program that has long trained New Yorkers to best respond to various disasters, like hurricanes and floods, with a quantity of 350,000 New Yorkers having already been trained.
The trainings had to be paused way back in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But now that life has felt more stabilized, Governor Hochul has felt more confident about it keeping New Yorkers safe. Specifically by informing and preparing them for anything that approaches them from the forces of nature.
Citizens have a choice to get ready for the trouble of weather.
There are five Citizen Preparedness training courses that will be held in the coming weeks with about three events scheduled at the Great New York State Fair in Syracuse and Hauppauge. Respectively, they take place on the August 28th and September 13th. One more event is in the process of scheduling in Riverhead.
These courses will allow New Yorkers to be prepped with skills to use in any life-threatening situations and also information to develop family emergency plans while taking up inventory on emergency supplies.
Volunteers from American Red Cross are also very important as they can teach courses. The staff from DHSES’ Office of Emergency Management and Office of Fire Prevention and Control has themselves contributed by conducting thousands of training courses across the state, while distributing more than 84,000 emergency preparedness kits.
In a public statement, Mayor General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General of New York, had this to say. “The men and women of our National Guard, who respond to help New Yorkers during floods, hurricanes, snowstorms, and most recently the COVID-19 pandemic, value the importance of being ready. We are proud to be able to once again be part of Governor Hochul’s efforts to ensure that New Yorkers know what to do when disaster strikes by providing training through the Citizen’s Preparedness Corps program.” It’s so great that the NY National Guard leads these sessions in case of emergencies.
