When we first laid eyes on the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, we called it a surprise that blew our minds. Now that we know how much it’s going to cost (more than expected!) and how tough it’ll be to get one (really tough!), that description fits even better. Ford has opened up a website where you can apply to hand over a whole lot of money if you live in Canada or the U.S. But if you’re anywhere else like Mexico, Europe, or the Middle East, you’ll have to wait until June.
At first, we guessed the GTD would be about $300,000 when we first saw it. We were wrong by a big margin. Ford now says it will start “around $325,000,” and they’ll start making them sometime between late this year and early next. But Ford is also thinking about having a driving school and a special series just for GTD owners, although they haven’t decided for sure.
So, what do you get for that $325k? You get a special version of the Mustang GT3, a car Ford hopes will win a big race called the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ford says it’ll have more than 800 horsepower, way more than the rules allow for its racing version. The transmission is moved to the back of the car, and it has a fancy 8-speed gearbox. The car has special shock absorbers and springs, and it can change its shape to make it go faster or handle better. It also has a fancy system to help it keep control on different roads. Most of these things are not allowed in racing, but the GTD doesn’t have to follow the rules.
But who decides who gets to buy one? Ford wants to know more about you and what you’ll do with the car before they let you buy it. They have a list of things they want to know:
- If you own or owned a Ford Mustang
- If you’re into car racing
- If you have other fast cars from different companies
- If you own a Ford or Lincoln
- If you or your company work with Ford
- If you’re a car collector
- If you think you’re someone who can influence other people’s opinions
- If you or your company use Ford cars for charity
Ford also wants to know about your car collection. They want to know if you really love Fords. If you’re an influencer, they want to know how many people you can reach and how you change what people think. They don’t tell us exactly how they decide, but it’s more than just asking for a car. It’s like when they picked people to buy the Ford GT, a very special process.
The GTD isn’t a regular Ford, so Ford wants to make sure the people who buy it are going to enjoy it and make others excited about it too. They don’t want people to buy it just to sell it later and make a lot of money. That’s why they won’t let anyone sell their GTD for 2 years after they buy it.
