NYC paparazzi had several near collisions with other cars and bystanders.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently found themselves in a very scary situation, as they were chased through the New York City streets by paparazzi. The couple was visiting the big apple to attend the Ms. Foundation for Women’s Annual Gala.

The paparazzi pursuit lasted more than two hours and had multiple near collisions with other drivers, pedestrians, and even NYPD officers.

NYPD’s deputy commissioner, Julian Phillips, spoke on the matter and said that NYPD worked with the couple’s private security team to keep them safe. He released a statement in which he described what happened saying, “There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard.”

The chase, which took place on Tuesday night, has been up for debate with regard to the true severity of it. The couple’s statements about the events lead it to appear that their lives were in grave danger due to the paparazzi’s actions. The paparazzi agency, Backgrid, which was responsible for the chase dispute these allegations. They released a statement discounting the claim that one of the four SUVs following the couple was driving recklessly.

In response, the royal’s team spoke again to say they never claimed their lives were at risk, but rather that the lives of bystanders were.

Regardless of how reckless the driving was or was not, the couple was followed for 75 minutes. They took refuge in an NYPD station and took multiple cars in unnecessary routes in order to get the paparazzi off their tail. They also had been able to keep their hotel a secret, so they worked hard to keep the location of that unknown.

One of the cars they took to throw off the camera people was a taxicab driven by 37-year-old Sonny Singh. Reportedly, Singh assisted in driving the couple around aimlessly and was completely unfazed by the whole ordeal.

Whether Prince Harry and Meghan were truly in danger or not, it is reasonable for them to be scared. This event is very reminiscent of the one that led to the prince’s mother’s passing. Princess Diana died in a fatal car crash in France as she was fleeing in a car being chased by paparazzi. Prince Harry has been very outspoken about his fears with his wife, due to much backlash to her being similar to the backlash his mother received in the royal family. He has made it clear that he prioritizes her safety and protection, so finding himself with his wife and her mother in a car with paparazzi following was likely a very terrifying experience.
