Rivian is preparing to introduce the R3X subcompact SUV before its standard R3 model hits the market. This plan was confirmed by Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, during a recent episode of the podcast Decoder. In addition to outlining their production schedule, Scaringe reiterated that Rivian would not be incorporating Apple CarPlay or Android Auto into its vehicles.

After about three years of selling the R1S and R1T, Rivian is set to broaden its range of vehicles. Following the planned debut of the compact R2 SUV in 2026, Rivian intends to add both the subcompact R3 and the sportier R3X to its offerings. The company aims to release the sportier R3X model before introducing the standard R3.

Details about the new models are still scarce, but the R2 and R3 will share a common platform. The R3’s wheelbase is five inches shorter than the R2’s. Positioned as a more accessible option, the larger R2 is expected to arrive in 2026 with a starting price around $45,000. Rivian has designed the R2 to be similar in size to competitors like the Porsche Macan and BMW X3, aiming to capture a more global audience.

Rivian’s choice to exclude Apple CarPlay and Android Auto might not sit well with a broader audience.

In an interview on Marques Brownlee’s podcast last year, Scaringe explained that the decision was driven by the need for control. He reiterated on the Decoder podcast that Rivian seeks to achieve the best possible software integration by maintaining tight control over it.

The Rivian R3 will feature the company’s distinctive design, with smooth body panels and wheels positioned at the corners. It boasts a short rear overhang and a power-operated rear hatch that includes a full-width taillight. Additionally, the smaller section containing the rear glass opens independently, which is handy for transporting longer items like surfboards.

Since the R3 shares its foundation with the R2, it will likely offer similar drivetrain options and battery configurations. The R3 is expected to have an estimated range of over 300 miles and the capability to charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes. Customers will have the option of a single electric motor powering the rear wheels or dual motors for all-wheel drive. A three-motor setup will be available on the more rugged R3X model.
